Spray and rotor heads are the right tool for turf, but they are frequently the wrong tool for garden beds, foundation plantings, and trees, and using them there anyway is one of the more common inefficiencies we find on established properties. Drip irrigation was designed specifically for these planted areas, and once you understand how it actually works, it’s clear why it consistently outperforms spray irrigation for anything that isn’t lawn.

How Drip Irrigation Actually Works
A drip system delivers water through narrow tubing fitted with emitters, small devices spaced along the line that release water slowly and directly at the base of each plant or along a root zone. Rather than spraying water through the air across a wide area, drip irrigation applies water at a low flow rate directly to the soil surface, where it can infiltrate slowly and thoroughly without runoff.
Because the water goes straight to the root zone instead of being sprayed across foliage, mulch, and open soil, drip irrigation eliminates the evaporation loss that happens when water droplets travel through the air and land on surfaces that don’t need water at all. It also eliminates the overspray onto adjacent hardscape, driveways, and walkways that’s common with spray heads positioned near garden beds.
Why Spray Irrigation Struggles With Garden Beds
Spray heads are designed to cover a defined arc and radius evenly, which works well for turf, a continuous surface with uniform water needs. Garden beds are the opposite: an irregular mix of plants with different water requirements, often at different heights, planted at different densities, with bare soil, mulch, and dense foliage all in the same zone. A spray head trying to cover that kind of area inevitably overwaters some plants and underwaters others, since it can’t distinguish between a moisture-loving hosta and a drought-tolerant sedum planted a few feet away.
Spray irrigation over garden beds also wets plant foliage directly, which increases the risk of fungal disease on susceptible ornamentals in the same way it does on turf. Water sitting on leaves for extended periods, particularly if a zone is running in the evening, creates conditions favorable for powdery mildew, black spot, and other common ornamental diseases. Drip irrigation, by delivering water to the soil rather than the plant surface, avoids this problem almost entirely.
Water Efficiency: The Numbers Behind the Difference
Drip irrigation is dramatically more water-efficient than spray irrigation for planted beds, generally cited at 90 percent application efficiency or better, compared to 50 to 70 percent for spray irrigation, largely because of the evaporation, wind drift, and overspray losses inherent in delivering water through the air. For a property with substantial bed area, the water savings from converting spray-irrigated beds to drip can be significant over a full season.
That efficiency also means drip zones typically need less total water to keep plants healthy than an equivalent spray zone would, since none of the applied water is lost before it reaches the root zone. This translates directly into lower water use for the same or better plant health outcome.
Better Results for Trees and Shrubs
Trees and established shrubs benefit from drip irrigation in a way that’s somewhat different from garden beds. Rather than a single emitter at the trunk, proper drip irrigation for trees uses multiple emitters or a drip ring positioned at the drip line, the outer edge of the canopy where the actively growing feeder roots are concentrated, rather than at the trunk where most of the root system isn’t actually absorbing water. This delivers water precisely where the tree can use it, encouraging a healthy, wide-spreading root system rather than concentrating roots near the trunk in search of water that’s only being applied there.
For newly planted trees and shrubs, which need consistent moisture during establishment but are also vulnerable to fungal issues and rot if overwatered at the trunk, drip irrigation provides the level of control that spray irrigation simply can’t match. As the plant matures, the drip system can be adjusted or expanded to follow the growing root zone.
Reduced Weed Pressure
Because drip irrigation wets only the immediate area around each emitter rather than the entire bed surface, it leaves more of the surrounding soil dry, which reduces germination conditions for weed seeds compared to a bed that’s uniformly wetted by spray. This isn’t a complete weed solution on its own, but it is a genuine secondary benefit that reduces the maintenance burden on garden beds over a season, particularly when combined with mulch, which further limits the soil surface area exposed to both moisture and light.
Designing a Drip System Around Your Landscape
Drip irrigation design starts with grouping plants by water need, sun exposure, and soil type, similar to the zoning principle used for turf but at a finer scale, since garden beds often mix plant types more than a lawn does. Drought-tolerant plantings, moisture-loving perennials, and specimen shrubs may all warrant separate drip zones or at least separate emitter flow rates within the same zone, so each plant gets an appropriate amount of water rather than a one-size-fits-all application.
Emitter selection matters as well. Different emitters release water at different flow rates, and matching emitter flow rate to a plant’s actual water need, rather than using identical emitters throughout a bed with mixed plantings, produces much better results than a uniform approach. For larger or more complex beds, inline drip tubing with pre-installed, evenly spaced emitters can simplify installation while still delivering targeted, efficient watering across the row.
Combining Drip With Turf Zones on the Same Property
Most residential properties in the Bucksport area benefit from a combination approach: spray or rotor zones for turf areas, and dedicated drip zones for garden beds, foundation plantings, and trees, all managed through the same controller. This lets each zone type run on a schedule appropriate to its actual watering needs, since turf and planted beds rarely need water on the same frequency or duration. A smart controller can manage this mixed system particularly well, applying weather-based adjustments differently to each zone type based on its specific programming.
Retrofitting drip irrigation into an existing spray-only system is generally straightforward, since it typically means adding a new zone or converting an existing zone’s heads to drip emitters rather than a full system redesign. We evaluate this during site visits for any property with significant bed area still running on spray zones designed primarily for the surrounding turf.
Maintenance Considerations
Drip systems require somewhat different maintenance attention than spray systems. Emitters can clog over time from mineral deposits or debris, particularly on well-supplied systems with higher sediment content, so periodic inspection and occasional emitter cleaning or replacement is part of routine drip system care. Drip tubing exposed to sunlight can also degrade over time and may need protection or periodic replacement in sections that aren’t covered by mulch.
