Plenty of homeowners are comfortable with basic home maintenance, and a fair number of irrigation issues really are within reach of someone willing to spend twenty minutes with a shovel and a small parts kit. But irrigation systems also have failure modes that look simple on the surface and are not, and knowing which category a given problem falls into can save you both money and a much larger repair down the road.

What Homeowners Can Reasonably Handle
A cracked or broken spray head is one of the most common irrigation repairs, and it’s genuinely one of the easier ones for a homeowner to tackle. Spray heads are designed to be replaceable without special tools: shut off the zone, dig around the head enough to access the connection, unscrew the damaged head, and thread in a replacement of the same type and nozzle. The main things to get right are matching the replacement head’s brand and model closely enough that it connects properly, and setting the new head to the correct height, flush with or very slightly above grade, so it doesn’t create a mowing hazard or get buried by soil and thatch.
Nozzle replacement and cleaning is even more approachable. Most nozzles simply pull out or unscrew from the top of the head, and swapping a clogged or worn nozzle for a new one of the correct type takes a few minutes with no digging required. This is worth doing proactively if you notice uneven spray patterns, since a partially clogged nozzle is one of the more common and easily fixed causes of patchy watering.
Adjusting a head’s arc or radius is another reasonable DIY task. Most spray and rotor heads have a simple adjustment screw or dial on top that changes the arc, and many also allow radius adjustment through a small screw that restricts flow. If a head is watering your driveway instead of your lawn, or covering a smaller area than it should, this adjustment usually takes less than a minute per head and requires no tools beyond a small flathead screwdriver in some cases.
Basic controller programming, adjusting run times, start times, and the days of the week a zone runs, is well within reach for most homeowners, particularly with the smartphone apps that accompany most current controllers. If you’re comfortable navigating a basic app interface, adjusting a schedule based on the seasonal guidance we and other sources provide is a reasonable task to handle yourself.
Where DIY Repairs Get Risky
Backflow preventer work is not a DIY task, full stop. This device protects the public water supply, and in most Maine municipalities it requires testing and certification by a licensed tester. Beyond the regulatory requirement, backflow preventers involve specific valve sequences for proper operation and winterization, and getting this wrong can result in a device that fails to protect against contamination when it matters, or that cracks from freeze damage because it wasn’t drained correctly.
Winterization in general is a common area where DIY attempts cause more harm than they prevent. Blowing out a system properly requires a compressor with adequate CFM output for your specific system’s pipe diameter and zone configuration. An undersized compressor, which is what most homeowners have access to as a rental or a home shop unit, often can’t generate enough continuous airflow to fully clear water from every zone, particularly zones with longer runs or more elevation change. Residual water left in the lines after an inadequate blowout freezes and expands, which can crack pipes, fittings, and valves in ways that aren’t visible until the system is reactivated the following spring, often as multiple simultaneous leaks rather than one obvious failure point.
Valve repair and replacement, particularly for solenoid valves, involves electrical wiring, water pressure, and often working inside an underground valve box where a small mistake, cross-threading a fitting or damaging a wire connection, can be difficult to diagnose later. Valves are also frequently not the actual source of a problem that looks like a valve issue; low pressure, wiring faults, or controller programming errors can all produce symptoms that resemble a bad valve, and misdiagnosing the cause means a replaced valve doesn’t fix anything.
Mainline breaks are almost always a professional repair. Finding a break in a pressurized underground mainline requires either visible surface evidence, which isn’t always present, or diagnostic methods that most homeowners don’t have access to. Repairing a mainline also requires proper pipe fusion or fitting techniques appropriate to the pipe material, and a poorly executed repair frequently fails again within a season, sometimes at a location adjacent to the first repair because of the added stress the patch placed on the surrounding pipe.
Controller wiring problems, as opposed to controller programming, also belong with a professional. If a zone won’t activate at all, the wiring between the controller and the valve, rather than the valve or the controller itself, is a common culprit, and tracing a wiring fault in an underground system requires diagnostic equipment most homeowners don’t own.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
The financial argument for calling a professional on the higher-risk items isn’t about the labor cost of the original repair. It’s about what happens when a DIY attempt doesn’t fully solve the problem, or creates a new one. An inadequately blown-out system can result in multiple cracked components discovered the following spring, turning what would have been a straightforward professional winterization into a multi-part repair. A misdiagnosed valve replacement means paying for a part that didn’t need replacing while the actual problem, whatever it was, is still unresolved. A poorly repaired mainline can fail again within weeks, sometimes causing more water damage or yard disruption on the second failure than the first.
None of this is a case against homeowner involvement in general. It’s a case for matching the repair to the actual skill and equipment it requires, and recognizing that some irrigation problems have failure modes that aren’t obvious until after a repair attempt has already gone wrong.
Signs You’ve Moved Into Professional Territory
A few signals suggest a problem has moved beyond straightforward DIY territory. If a repair requires disconnecting or working near the backflow preventer, if the system needs anything beyond basic zone-by-zone winterization drainage, if a valve isn’t responding to controller commands correctly, or if you’re seeing water surfacing somewhere other than at a head, at the mainline itself, or at a fitting, these are all situations where a professional diagnosis will save time and prevent a bigger problem than the one you started with.
Persistent issues that don’t resolve after a reasonable DIY attempt are also worth escalating rather than continuing to troubleshoot. If you’ve replaced a head and the coverage problem persists, or adjusted an arc and the overspray continues, the underlying cause may be something other than what you initially diagnosed, and a professional visit at that point is usually faster and less expensive than continuing to guess.
